FC Crystal’s involvement in the Football Rebooted initiative demonstrates how grassroots football can drive meaningful environmental and social change.
At its core, the project tackles a growing environmental issue: the waste of usable sports equipment. By encouraging players and families to donate outgrown or unused football boots, FC Crystal has helped keep valuable materials in circulation and out of landfill. This simple but visible collection system - supported by consistent community engagement—shows how local clubs can play a direct role in reducing waste and promoting a culture of reuse. Extending the lifecycle of football boots not only reduces environmental impact, but also reinforces sustainable habits among young players and their families.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the initiative has created a powerful model for social impact. By partnering with the Bradley Hill Project, FC Crystal ensured that donated boots reach young people who need them most. In a community where access to proper sports equipment can be a barrier, this collaboration removes that obstacle, enabling more young people to participate in football, both recreationally and in school settings.
This case study highlights how a grassroots football club, through strong community partnerships and a commitment to sustainability, can deliver lasting environmental benefits while also improving access, inclusion, and wellbeing in the local community.

About Football Rebooted
Did you know over 1 million pairs of football boots end up in landfill every year?
Football Rebooted is football’s biggest ever environmental movement with a mission
to save at least one million pairs of football boots from landfill, by getting them back
onto the feet of players right across the UK.
The simple, but innovative campaign has been co-created by former international football star David James MBE, grassroots football communities, and Utilita Energy - the UK’s only energy company created to help households use less energy to save the pocket, and the planet.
Every time a pair of football boots or trainers is made, about 30lbs of carbon is generated. Football Rebooted aims to rehome one million pairs of ‘pre-played’ football boots and AstroTurf trainers, saving families money in the process, as well as 136,000 tonnes of carbon – the same as taking 7,000 cars off the road for a year[ii] or turning the energy off in one million medium-sized houses for a week.
By signing up, you’ll help:
Collect pre-worn boots & trainers from your community
Redistribute them to local schools, charities, or grassroots clubs
Help protect the environment by reducing waste
Give more kids access to the beautiful game.
